But, first, some related vocabulary!

dystopian- a society that is repressive, unbearable, and/or frightening

We often use this adjective to describe future scenarios of undesirable societies, such as in The Hunger Games.

it’s not the end of the world- it’s not the worst problem

We say this idiom a lot when talking about our problems, trying to make ourselves or someone else feel better. Like, even if you lose your house, or are getting divorced, hey, at least it’s not the end of the world! Life goes on!

grave- (adj.) very serious

apocalypse- the end of the world

end times- period of time before the apocalypse

For pretty much any period in human history, people thought their world was in grave danger.

I know there’s a lot of stuff happening now that frightens many of us- but, be comforted by the fact that this has always been the case, and, probably, always will!

OK, so that’s not very comforting! But, the cool thing about all this fear and paranoia is that they inspire some amazing movies!

Best End-of-World Movies Through the Decades

Planet of the Apes (1968)

Sci-fi classic! A crew crashes on a planet in the future, where apes are the dominant species and humans are their slaves.

Stars Charlton Heston, who was known for being a handsome leading actor, before becoming the face of the NRA.

There’s a clip below!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Super fun flick. Takes place in San Francisco. Humans are being replaced with alien clones!

Stars a young Jeff Goldblum! I love that man.

Blade Runner (1982)

I talked about it, and the sequel, in this blog post.

12 Monkeys (1995)

Directed by Terry Gilliam, and starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. In the future, disease devastates humanity. So, a convict is sent back in time to try and stop it.

I just re-watched this recently, and, it’s still awesome.

28 Days Later (2002)

It’s four weeks after a virus has wiped out humanity and turned some into the walking dead. A small group of survivors fights for their lives.

It stars easy-on-the-eyes Cillian Murphy, who is also in the next film.

Sunshine (2007)

One of my favorite sci-fl films! A team of astronauts must head out to reignite the dying sun in the year 2057.

Zombieland (2009)

Super fun zombie movie! A small group of random people join forces to travel across America, killin’ monsters. It’s a supernatural/horror romp of a good time.

Stars Jessie Eisenberg and Wood Harrelson.

Daybreakers (2009)

In 2019 (!), a plague has turned all humans into vampires. But, now they’re running out of blood!

Stars Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe.

Looper (2012)

Takes place in 2074, and it’s about mob hits and time-travelling assassins.

Stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
